I've solved this problem already. I wrote a patch to make coldsync use
libusb, which is a library to communicate with USB devices.

Since it supports Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD and MacOS X, you don't
have special code for each OS.

Plus it keeps code out of the kernel, which is always a win.

I forget why it was rejected so long ago, but I can always brush it off
and resubmit it.
