[coldsync-hackers] Coldsync, IrDA and Mac OS X

Hi,
I just managed to sync my Handspring Visor Platinum under Mac OS X using
IrDA. I thought I'd post the details...

  i) I did not use the USB cradle (DUH). There is no USB driver for Visor
with MacOS X so it has no /dev entry. (Note: I read a message from someone
here wanting to modify coldsync to make it use IOKit. I think a better
solution would be to make a driver that exposed a /dev entry and leave
coldsync alone. I'm no expert though.)

ii) I used the IrDA port on the back of my Powerbook G4. System: MacOS X
10.1.1 (5M28)

iii) I made sure that the IrDA networking was turned off in the
Networking Preference Panel. I don't know if this is neccessary, but it
seemed like a good idea. (I never use IrDA networking, so I have restarted
with it off - no idea if that's neccessay either)

iv) compile coldsync. It configures and compiles fine. It does have a
lot of warnings while building though.

  v) point the .coldsyncrc at "/dev/cu.IrDA-IrCOMMch-b". (anyone know the
difference between /dev/cu.blah and /dev/tty.blah? I have both. I tried
the cu one first and it worked. Haven't tried the tty one.)

  vi) % coldsync -mI
This returns more stuff that you put in your .coldsyncrc. Note that if
you get a "-G" on the end of a visor serial number you need to remove it.

  vii) % coldsync

  And it works :) Wheeeeee!

The only problem I have is that it seems extremely slow (hours for the
initial sync). Any suggestions on fixing that?

later,

\x/ill          :-}
