Oh, you are right. However, I think there is already lots of
confusion to the user in what kind of option he should pick (if you
have a USB visor on linux, you should take -serial??). Maybe all these
twists should be completely hidden from the user; and also it would
be consistent if the switches are the same on *BSD and linux.

How about a system where the user has to supply the correct tty, maybe
with as option -usb or -serial, and then have coldsync figuring out
what kind of protocols to use; e.g. by having some kind of ioctl to
the USB serial driver to get device information (like the USB reported
vendor and productname, or maybe vendor and product ids). This would
be a sensible and informational USB serial driver addition anyway?

By the way, I don't think we'll ever see a serial-simple (like you
have a usb-simple), since SLP and PADP are really necessary protocols
if you have a conventional serial link, imo.
