With the system I am slowly putting together, the MySQL database is the heart of all the data. I am even doing a one-way synchronisation with an OpenLDAP (although using a custom MySQL backend for LDAP may be a better long term solution).


The "desktop" client uses PHP, so again, it is dealing with the "master" data directly.

We use the LDAP interface for desktop mail clients, and for our VoIP handsets, which have an LDAP lookup program (including on incoming calls, which is neat).
