 I've note been able to read the whole thread but...

 i suggest to write the id both in the record id and in another place
 inside the record. When you work with this id (conduits, on the Palm)
 check if it's the same in all places and throw an error it is not.

 So far, i;ve never had the id changed but.. who knows ;)
