On BSDish systems, and perhaps others, you also have devices
of the form /dev/ttypX and /dev/ptypX. These are serial lines that are
linked together: anything written to /dev/ttyp0 can be read from
/dev/ptyp0, and vice versa.
You can use this to test syncing over a serial line: tell POSE
that its serial port is at /dev/ttyp9, and tell ColdSync that its
serial port is at /dev/ptyp9.
