RE: [coldsync-hackers] Real life experiences with netsync (thanks!)
Hi Alessandro, Alex, Rob, Andrew and Brian!
Well, that was my first post to the coldsync list, and I must say that I
am impressed with all the responses I got. I have *never* had so many
comprehensive replies to a first "newbie" post. Thanks guys!
It seems to me that a project's usefulness is not just about code, but
also about community support... which you guys seem to be good at. So
have you considered starting an IRC channel on irc.openprojects.net? (I
notice that #coldsync is not used).
Incidentally, before posting to the list I made sure that I got Coldsync
2.3.1 working with netsync on my Visor and webserver. It was tricky, but
I managed to configure it to change the default sync dir so that
coldsync is assigned its own userid, and when a user syncs, his data
goes into a subdir of that coldsync user's homedir. The biggest problem
I found was getting the syntax for coldsync.conf and palms correct for
my Visor.
However, I failed to get Coldsync working with xinetd, but maybe I don't
need to -- and a looping shell script would be as effective. (I guess I
ought to try Alex/Rob's daemon patch for that - but is that needed on
2.3.1 ?)
Also, what's the status of Coldsync with xinetd, I saw that Jeff Hoover
had posted a /etc/xinetd.d/netsync-wakeup to the list in December 2001,
but does Coldsync actually support this? (I kept getting an error
indicating that the port was already in use).

I reckon typically 1,000 users but I work for myself, so there is no
"company" to pay me, but maybe I can get clients to pay for it.

I certainly will use Coldsync!! I am going off the idea of writing
custom conduits that sync with the server directly, mainly because of
the complexity, but also because it wouldn't support a workstation-less
dial-in sync.
Thanks once again,
Andy
