v1.4.6? Gosh, that's an old one. I'm glad you've been happy
with it for so long. Then again, 90% of the desirable functionality
was added early on.
IMHO the single most compelling feature is daemon mode. When
properly set up, it makes ColdSync listen on the serial port (or
whatever), so that you can sync merely by plugging in your Palm and
pushing the "Sync" button on the cradle.
If you find yourself always specifying the -I (force
installing databases) or -z (install new databases after the main
sync) options on the command line, you might want to upgrade so that
you can put these configuration statements in the config file where
they belong.
There's also an assortment of bug fixes and miscellaneous
improvements, as well as a bunch of new features that you probably
wouldn't care about, since the NEWS file didn't convince you.
So on one hand, if v1.4.6 does everything you want and you're
comfortable with it, you can stay with it. OTOH, if you ever run into
a problem, bear in mind that my first reaction (and presumably that of
most other people here) will be to tell you to upgrade to the latest
stable version.
Of course, you can install a newer version and try it out; if
you configure with "--prefix=/folks/rcbowen/new-coldsync", you won't
clobber the existing version and can see for yourself whether you like
it better than the old version.
