My 2 cents:

autorescue. let's try to elaborate.
Purpose of auto-rescue is to restore Palm as it was from last Backup.
( We will be unable to restore categories changed, but it is already
discussed )
I would propose the following for auto-rescue - minimal, but good enough.
Scenario - you lost your PDA or hard-resetted it.
1) If Hot_Sync_name blank and user_id is 0 - install ChName on PDA
2) User sets his Hot_sync_name using ChName and syncs again ( user_id should
be left 0 )
3) If Hot_Sync_name blank and user_id is 0 - ColdSync picks Backup directory
by Hot_Sync_name and installs everything in it to PDA
It is quite possible to pickup Backup directory by other fields - like
Serial number, but Hot Sync seems to be natural.
Of course - only limitation that it must be unique.
