Ah, excellent point.  I am officially persuaded.  I was not aware that the 
visor device was being used for PPP; I had assumed some sort of a usio or 
ucomm device would be used instead.  However, I can see how a generic 
USB-serial device wouldn't necessarily know how to deal with a Palm.

As for the speed issues, does communication with the Palm over a relatively 
small link (4-12mbps) really benefit from speed tweaking?  (This is an honest 
question, I haven't tried.)
