Well, last night I went ahead and tried a hard reset, and it worked!
So I initialized the user & id, restored some of my data, did another
sync to create a backup, and spent 20 minutes getting together some
other stuff to sync in.  Then I tried to sync and it failed, just as
it had been failing before.  I tried another hard reset again (and
again, and again), but this time it didn't help.

So I'm frustrated, and about ready to give up.  At this point I'd
really love to hear from someone, anyone, who *can* get the PEG-T615C
to sync with coldsync, preferably with kernel 2.4.17.  That way I'd at
least know that it's a problem either with my system or with my Clie.
