I did the user-space patch for m50x with coldsync (on linux). The very
remarkable thing with getting it to work on linux is that
   a) the first 6 bytes that the palm device should be sending are not
      received by coldsync; so far we have not been able to determine
      if this is an oddity of the palm, or some problem in the linux
      usb stack
   b) sometimes there are problems with data sent by the palm either
      being dropped somewhere on its way to coldsync, or the palm not
      sending this data. therefore, sometimes coldsync hangs.

Adding to this that BSD experiences other weird problems (having the
sync fail completely), I would be inclined to blame the Palm for all
of these problems. Thus, I would not necessarily agree with your
assumption.
