In Cobol-68 we had a lot of this.  Currently, you will see compilers 
accepting additional simple insertion characters (eg, ":") and a character 
for 16-bit character (N in the draft standard, but K (Kanji) and other 
letters in some compilers).

I'm a non-voting member of J4.  Some are calling it Cobol-2000, but I'm not.

Cobol-20XX has real exception handling.  The current intent is for GNU 
Cobol to meet Cobol-1985 (as amended) but all implementors should have an 
eye toward the demands of Cobol-20XX.
