In Cobol-68 we had a lot of this. Currently, you will see compilers
accepting additional simple insertion characters (eg, ":") and a character
for 16-bit character (N in the draft standard, but K (Kanji) and other
letters in some compilers).

I'm a non-voting member of J4. Some are calling it Cobol-2000, but I'm not.

Cobol-20XX has real exception handling. The current intent is for GNU
Cobol to meet Cobol-1985 (as amended) but all implementors should have an
eye toward the demands of Cobol-20XX.
