Hmmm... There shouldn't be any changes between pre4 and CVS that would have 
triggered such a thing...

Did you maybe do a bunch of package upgrades on your system since the 
previous time you built coldsync?

I'm running Fedora, so I'm just an apt-get away from all sorts of things 
breaking (that recent perl 5.8.1 to 5.8.3 upgrade, for example). You might 
have just experienced something similar.
