Since OS X is unix based, try using coldsync to get the prc and pdb files from the Palm
It sounds like the MAC Palm Hotsync software is auto-converting the files to
something other than the prc and pdb files (these are Palm files and have nothing to
do with windows, mac, or unix/linux)
PS - I am not a Mac user - so this is just an idea
