Look at the kernel log messages, it will tell you which port to try to
connect to (well, as David said, some of the Sony devices lie, but if
you try to connect to the wrong one, the kernel log will tell you that
you should try a lower one if it's one of those odd devices.)
Or if you are running the 2.5.x kernel, you can look in
/proc/tty/driver/usbserial at which usb-serial devices are connected
(then use the first number as the /dev/ttyUSB node to connect to.)
Aren't dynamic devices and their proper nodes just wonderful? :)
Trust me, people are trying to work on better solutions...
