I think Alessandro's concept will allow you to roll all three of your steps
into two steps
1. find a PDA with no user name or user id. check for the PDA serial number
in /etc/palms. if the serial number is there, install progs (such as
ChName) and dump the files in the backup dirctory to the palm. if the
serial number is not in /etc/palms then it's a new Palm so display an error
(with the new PDA serial number) in the log file so the admin can set it up
(can this be emailed to the admin?)
2. user uses ChName to change username and userid so next sync is a normal
one
