If you (or anyone else) could tell me whether there are
library functions to parse /etc/nsswitch.conf (under Solaris), that'd
be helpful.

It depends on the PDA. On the main Launcher screen, pull down
the "App / Info" menu item, then tap "Version". If it shows you a
serial number like the sample ones in the coldsync man page, use that.
Otherwise, if it's a Handspring visor, use
snum: *Visor*;
Otherwise, use
snum: "";
as above, and if that doesn't work, omit the "snum" line entirely.
