No, as the file says, you _must_ press the hotsync button first.  It's a
hardware issue.

Have you tried putting the "simple" description in your .coldsyncrc
file?  That should allow you to sync properly (see the man page for
information about the Palm m50x devices, that's what your Clié looks
like.)
