Very nicely done. Congrats on getting this working.
Now to go tell everyone who's been pestering me about having this
working to go get coldsync and this patch :)

It's called the "USB Handspring Visor Driver" under the "USB Serial
Converter support" section of the "USB support" section of the kernel
config. I'll probably be changing that name, as the palm devices now
work.

Only use usb-uhci or usb-ohci. Do NOT use uhci.o. It will not work.
This is a known problem in the uhci.o driver.

Check the kernel console log for which tty it is connected to.

Coldsync only seems to have this "problem" so I'm thinking that it's
something in the program. Pilot-xfer doesn't seem to have this problem
(i.e. I can't reproduce it.)
If you have any dumps that show the problem is in the visor driver,
please let me know. I'd be glad to fix them. Only ones I've seen are
ones that the data didn't seem to come in at all in on the USB
connection, which tends to mean the Palm itself is messing up somewhere
(nah, there can't be bugs in the Palm...)
Thanks again for getting this to work.
