[coldsync-hackers] Double snapshot announcement: 1.5.5, 1.6.0
I've just uploaded not one, but two ColdSync snapshots (they're at
http://www.ooblick.com/software/coldsync/, as usual).
Version 1.5.5 is mainly a bug-fix release; in particular, a few
memory leaks have been closed. It also includes a very primitive
memory-leak detection tool (when, oh when will Purify run under *BSD?).
There's also a new feature: if you set the speed to 0 in the
(serial) listen block (or if you omit the "speed:" line entirely),
ColdSync will just go with whatever the Palm suggests (there should also
be some way of specifying "Go as fast as the serial port allows,
regardless of what the Palm says", but that's a different story).
In version 1.6.0, ColdSync supports NetSync. At least
partly. There's a new listen type:
listen net { }
that allows ColdSync to be the server for a network sync, where the Palm
is in a cradle on a remote host. This has only been tested with HotSync; I
assume that it works with pilot-link, but I haven't tried it.
As far as I can tell, you need PalmOS 3.1 to be able to set the
sync host on the Palm. Alternately, if you have a dual-boot *nix/Windows
machine, you can run HotSync under Windows and set the machine as the
Primary PC for NetSync. If you don't have Windows and PalmOS 3.1, and want
to set the Primary PC on the Palm, your best bet is to hack the source.
...which is okay, because the source is a shambles right now. I
engaged in some major housecleaning, the net result of which will
hopefully be cleaner and more readable code. The 1.6.0 snapshot is very
alpha. It compiles, but that's about all I can say for it.
